Beat the Summer Heat, Hike above 10,000' in Sandia Mountains
On the East side of the Sandias, there are several great trails above 10k' that are great hikes in the summer heat. This time we hiked from the Ellis parking lot again, but headed North on Ellis Trail. Wildflowers are starting to bloom at this altitude.

Parking at the Ellis lot, we hiked a loop going towards the Tram station, short down and up the La Luz connector trail, then back on Rocky Point trail to the Ellis lot. Total mileage was 2.5 miles but the whole hike was above 10k' elevation.
Easy Hike to San Gregorio Reservoir | Santa Fe National Forest, New Mexico

A beautiful hike.... but lousy weather! We had a huge snowfall in winter, and a late spring melt, so the whole area was rather swampy. It was WINDY on the day of our hike, so with the mushy ground, the hike ended at the reservoir. San Pedro Parks Wilderness is a natural area, please keep it that way!

    A sweet gem in central NM. Fond memory of my father and I staying here before a visit to the VLA (rip pops). It was our goto site for Astronomical Imaging. I like to collect the pinon pine sap to use as incense during Christmas back home. My favorite BLM sight in NM.

    I so love Ellis! I read somewhere that they were gonna build a road back in there, that’s why it’s so open.. glad they decided not to! A few years ago for some odd reason I started that trail kinda late in the afternoon.. I saw 7 turkeys, 4 deer and a big o bear! The most wildlife I have ever seen on a hike in the Sandias!

    Thank you for this video, we have been to half of these and agree with you on your assessments. We have never been to Columbine as we are concerned about big crowds whitch typically brings noise and generators. We are going on an exploratory trip to Hopewell to check it out in a couple of weeks. Over the years many of our historical camping areas have burned and so must find other locations. So we are headed north! Always love your videos and tree hugs. HA!

    We camped here two weeks ago while on a southwest NM trip. We were towing a 16' Lance camper trailer with a Kia Telluride. The one lane road up to the campground has a rough section with steep, rocky and 2 switchbacks. Put the Kia in 4WD and did fine. 12 campsites. Finding a somewhat level site was not easy but we did and were able to level the rig. CG not even 1/2 full (weekday). Nice canyon hike past the group site. When we left my wife walked down the road with a Walkie-talkie (no cell service) to make sure no one was coming up.....NO backing up or passing there with a camper.

    Thanks so much for posting this video! I’m planning to get there as early as I can on a Tuesday. I have a 29 foot trailer and it looks like there’s plenty of bigger trailers at the site which is reassuring although I am a bit nervous about the drive up. Could you tell me if they only accept cash payment?

    • @RobinT-treehugger
      @RobinT-treehugger 18 дней назад

      I am not sure about payment. Many campgrounds have gone to the scan & pay, but the wifi up there is non-existent.....so maybe cash only? The drive up can be tricky as there is a section that is narrow with some blind curves. Take it slow... and have a great time!
